I believe there is enough space in my classroom for dancing, but I believe there is also enough space for math, art, English, science…even a little history. I believe freedom and responsibility go hand in hand, and I do my best to maintain a calm learning environment but also show students how best to use freedom and creativity. Students in my class learn about how to move their bodies as they dance, but they also learn to explore their world through dance. I believe that dance is a vessel for education just like reading is a vessel for adventure.
My students learn more than how to warm-up or leap across the floor. I teach so students who struggle academically can come to the Dance Room and feel successful counting the math in movement, feeling science in their muscles, and writing a dance tale. These experiences stick with the students as they go back to their regular classrooms. They understand because the lesson is locked in their bodies.
I treat each child as an individual. Mainly I encourage freedom of expression and tolerance, and I also encourage a strong work ethic and natural curiosity of the world. I demonstrate this by embodying it in my classroom. We all work together in a collaborative environment where respect is shared and individuality is expressed freely.
